Tonkin Gulf incidentic – US ships atttacked by North Vietnamese boats. President L. B. Johnson orders action.

 

1965

US bases in South Vietnam attacked. Bombing of North Vietnam begin. US Marines landed in Da Nang.

 

1966

US ground force build up, another Marines to Da Nang and Chu Lai.

 

1967

Heavy fighting near Saigon, US Marines sent to defend DMZ.

 

1968

Defence of Khe Sanhu by Marines. Offensive Tet in South Vietnam. Fights in Saigon, Hue etc.

In March was restricted bombing of North Vietnam, negotiations offers by Communists.

Bombing halt. R.Nixon elected president.

 

1969

January

Peace talks in Paris. US forces in strenght 542 400.

July

US forces withdrawal planned.

 

1970

Cambodia invasion.

Congress repeals Tonkin Gulf resolutions.

 

1971

South Vietnamese invasion to Laos. Reduction of US forces. Last Marines depart.

 

1972

North Vietnam invade South, bombing resumed and US support returned.

North Vietnam ports mined.

Last US combat force departed.

 

1973

January

Peace agreement between USA and North Vietnam.

March

Last US soldiers departed Vietnam.
